Create a checklist to help a newly recruited physician

You must address both large and small details before your new doctor can effectively and productively see patients. For instance, without a license to practice medicine, the physician cannot treat patients. If the doctor's name does not appear on the door or in the phone book, patients may be confused when they come for visits. Without business cards or a bio on the practice Web site, the new doctor may not feel accepted in the practice.

Plan early to avoid being unprepared and create a checklist that includes action items such as the following:

  • Help the physician apply for state medical license, federal and state DEA certificates, and all appropriate numbers for practicing (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid numbers)
  • Apply to managed-care plans and hospitals in the area to obtain appropriate privileges for the new physician
  • Obtain malpractice insurance effective the day the new physician begins
