Introducing your patients to a new PA or NP presents you with a moment of truth. Sometimes patients resist being “brushed off” onto someone they consider a second-rate practitioner. Helping your patients understand and accept the excellent care a qualified non-physician provider can bring depends on you, the physician. Here are several suggestions that can make your PA or NP more credible in the your patients’ eyes:
- Include his or her name on the practice letterhead, signs, and printed material
- Include biographical information and general information about PAs or NPs in your patient brochure
- Describe the advantages for patients provided by an extender—like improved availability when really needed
- Personally introduce your PA or NP to every patient at the first encounter
