Payer mix analysis

As part of your monthly financial reporting and analysis work, you should be looking at payer mix analyses.  You should prepare a trended report of both charges and payments.  By preparing from both angles you get a rounded picture, and by trending it you can easily see if there are changes in your payer mix.  If you only look at or isolate the current month you will never know, until it’s too late, that there is a shift.  As far as payer mix relative to visits – if your payers are paying you, then payments should give you the same information.  Remember to look at things from a percentage standpoint always – the dollars are almost irrelevant because they pay at different levels.
