Understanding cultural competency

Cultural competency is the ability to understand and appreciate the cultural differences between both your patients and your staff. It should be fully integrated as a fundamental component in all aspects of the practice.

Create a policy which details your committment to cultural compentency and include it in your employee handbook. The policy should identify your aim to prevent, identify, and resolve barriers to treating the health conditions of your patients, as well as barriers which prevent you and your staff from working together productively. It should also include these principles:

  • Inclusiveness
  • Respect
  • Value
  • Service
  • Understanding
  • Compliance
