Verify practice liability when staffers travel

Remember, you're legally responsible if a member of your staff is injured (or injures someone else) while engaged in any activity associated with his or her employment.

In most cases, staffers' medical expenses will be covered by any insurance benefits you help underwrite—another good reason to offer this fringe as part of your total compensation package. But you may not be covered if an employee injures someone while driving—even in a personal vehicle—within his or her employment (which the law defines broadly).

Look into non-owner auto liability coverage to protect you against this possibility, and for long staff trips, investigate trip insurance. You can claim the cost on your tax return.
